Where NOLA Eats

BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER

Hello, New Orleans food fans, and welcome to this generator-powered, ice-cooled edition of the Where NOLA Eats newsletter. As most of the metro area enters Day 4 without electricity in the wake of the devastating Category 4 Hurricane Ida, we check in with the restaurants that anchor our community through the toughest times. Volunteers organize meal giveaways, and a few places reopen. Plus, we have the latest on power outages around the city. Let's dig in...

1. Can I help you?

"I was going stir crazy in Texas, I had to get back here and do something,” says Kelly Mayhew, an Army veteran and the owner of Mayhew Bakeries in Faubourg St. John. He and others have opened community aid centers to distribute free essentials.

2. Supply chain.

A few grocery stores and corner markets opened on generator power with limited staff to sell ice, fuel and food after the hurricane knocked out power. Lines were mostly orderly and people were patient in spite of the stifling heat.

3. Wait! There's more.

A New Orleans cooking school rapidly transforms into a hub of Hurricane Ida food relief; the Howlin' Wolf music club, which fed thousands in the pandemic, gets cooking again, and hundreds stand in line for deep-fried takeout at the unstoppable Man chu on Claiborne Avenue in Treme. Plus, we really hope you don't need these tips for cleaning and deodorizing your fridge.

4. Help wanted?

Volunteers are needed to assemble and give away meals around the city as storm-related power outages drag on. Find opportunities to help in our Where NOLA Eats Facebook community.

5. Sweating it out.

The big question remains: When will power be restored? While the French Quarter and some other spots around the city were reconnected on Thursday, the vast majority of customers are still waiting. Here's the latest.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Thanks for reading!
