Where NOLA Eats

BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER

Hello again, New Orleans food fans! This week we learned that a beloved New Orleans restaurant may be serving Creole classics at Disneyland before long. We check in with Eric Cook, of Gris-Gris, on his latest venture. Top Taco vows to continue its festival, and a landmark of Vietnamese comfort food is growing. Plus there's more...

1. Dooky's at Disney?

The Disney folks love New Orleans. When a team was in town recently to brainstorm a new ride based on "The Princess and the Frog," we also learned that the Magic Kingdom is looking to add a food component — and Dooky Chase's might play a role. Read our exclusive report here.

2. New place, old recipes.

Eric Cook, best known as the chef and owner of the Lower Garden District's Gris Gris, has a new place in the works at a familiar spot (remember Maximo's?) on Decatur Street in the French Quarter. For the Creole roots menu at Saint John, he's pulling weather-beaten Creole cookbooks off family bookshelves. Ian McNulty talked to Cook and chef de cuisine Daren Porretto about their concept.

3. Wait! There's more.

In stressful times, Ian McNulty craves a bowl of pho from Lilly's Café, and soon there'll be a second location. Sal the Fruit Man is gone, but his effort to feed the hungry lives on. The Top Taco food festival forges ahead with a vaccine mandate, and the Oak Street diner Live Oak Cafe is back with music and some changes.

4. Quarter time?

The French Quarter may have more restaurants, inch for inch, than anywhere on the planet. What's your favorite? Chime in on our Where NOLA Eats Facebook page.

5. Grill to thrill!

For a quick, delicious summer dinner, throw flank steak on the grill. Karen Martin has the recipe with a knockout garlic herb sauce to dress it up.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Stay safe, have a great weekend, and thanks for reading!
