In today's newsletter, former Mackinac Island Ferry Company CEO sues new owner, takeaways from Trump’s latest stop and why is Michigan buying up farmland? |
How is September treating you so far? |
Welcome back! I hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend. Some would argue the return of college football should be a holiday itself. On Friday, Michigan State held on for a 16-10 win against Florida Atlantic at Spartan Stadium. On Saturday, Michigan football bested Fresno State 30-10 at the Big House. We all know what's going down Sunday night as the Detroit Lions prepare to kick off their season against the Los Angeles Rams. Beyond that, here's why the Lions have Super Bowl hopes. |

Where Michigan school districts rank in 4 factors key to educational outcomes |
Test scores range widely in Michigan school districts — but experts say it's not just the quality of the district that contributes to educational outcomes. MLive has used the latest U.S. Census data to create a demographic profile for each of Michigan’s 500-plus school districts. MLive looked at four data points that correlate to educational outcomes: Median family income, percentage of adult residents with a bachelor’s degree, childhood poverty rates, percentage of families with children headed by a married couple. Bloomfield Hills is among the highest, with the top median family income of $203,117. Other districts near the top in multiple categories include Birmingham, Northville and East Grand Rapids. More in education: The NFL is donating AEDs to 50 schools across Michigan in partnership with Damar Hamlin’s Chasing M’s Foundation. |

Former Mackinac Island Ferry Company CEO sues new owner |
Two months after a Florida-based private equity firm purchased the Mackinac Island Ferry Company, its former CEO has filed a lawsuit against the new owners, alleging he was wrongfully fired and has been defamed in recent weeks. The lawsuit is seeking a jury trial and damages based on allegations of wrongful termination, breach of contract and defamation. An update: The University of Michigan inked a 10-year agreement with Legends Global Merchandise to serve as the school’s official athletic retailer. Under the deal, of which financial terms were not disclosed, Legends will have exclusive licensing rights to manage, operate, sell and distribute all Michigan merchandise under the “M Den” brand name. Also in business: A Tennessee developer is hoping to “revitalize” the aging RiverTown Crossings mall in Grandville after buying the property. |

4 takeaways from Trump’s latest stop in Michigan |
Catch up in politics: From transgender women in sports to fully subsidizing a fertility procedure, former President Donald Trump’s remarks billed as a speech on the economy covered a wide range of topics. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for about 70 minutes Thursday, Aug. 29, inside a metal processing and distribution facility in Potterville, a city of about 3,000 people just southwest of the state’s capital. Here are four takeaways from Trump’s remarks at Alro Steel. On the other side: Vice President Kamala Harris addressed a crowd of hundreds of labor union members inside a Detroit high school gymnasium Monday, Sept. 2. Harris touted her support for pro-union policies. Coming to town: President Joe Biden plans to return to Michigan Sept. 6. White House officials said the president will visit the state to discuss how his administration’s “Investing in America” agenda has impacted Michigan. |

Overworked corrections officers demand action to solve Michigan prison staffing crisis |
Speaking up: There weren’t many corrections officers protesting near the Parnall Correctional Facility in Jackson Thursday afternoon, but it wasn’t because of a lack of interest. Highlighting the need for something more to be done about short staffing in Michigan’s prisons, only about 20 corrections officers participated in the Aug. 29 protest because many others were inside the facility working mandatory overtime, union officials said. Advocating for higher wages: Western Michigan University’s professor’s union hasn’t gone on strike in 40 years. But with frustrations over pay negotiations in the union’s contract, union leadership says it may be time for another. The union approved a contract with the university in 2021 with an agreement to rediscuss wages and health care in 2024. In crime: A shooting on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Michigan State Fair left a 14-year-old boy dead and another teen boy injured. |

Why is Michigan buying up farmland? New project could fight Lake Erie algae blooms |
To know: Large swaths of southeast Michigan were drained for cropland, but a pilot project is aiming to let the water back in, boosting water quality in the Great Lakes. Surveying to learn more: The lakeshore region’s economic development arm is seeking input on how to make Ottawa and Allegan counties more attractive to young professionals. On the road: It’s September but those construction barrels aren’t going anywhere. Here are 12 road closures to look out for this week. |
