Dear Friend,

Sholem aleichem to you all, from Sweden! I’m writing from the Limmud Stockholm conference, where I’ve been asked to speak on a variety of topics related to Yiddish culture: “How the Yiddish Forward Is Being Transformed in the Digital Age,” “The Powerful Role Women Played in the Yiddish-Speaking Shtetl” and “How ‘Shtisel’ Has Changed the Way We Look at Haredi Jews.”

Did you know that Sweden is one of the only countries in the world where Yiddish is an official minority language? As a result, the government provides funding for a variety of Yiddish-themed causes, including Yiddish conferences and the publishing of Yiddish children’s books.

Before my trip to Stockholm, I was invited to speak in Israel and Finland about how the Forverts is transforming itself in the new millennium. The United States also has seen renewed interest in Yiddish, with the Forverts at the forefront. Every day we’re making connections and growing our community, bringing Yiddish to new parts of the world.

Trips like these and our exciting new projects at home are made possible by your support. We need your help to sustain the vibrant Yiddish culture of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Give now and help fund reader-supported Yiddish language journalism.

Wishing you all a freylekhn danktog (Happy Thanksgiving),

Rukhl Schaechter, Editor
