Good morning and happy Friday. Here are 297 words of what you need to know to start your weekend.

A clear, warmer Friday. Twin Cities highs in the upper 30s, with clouds clearing after the morning. Nighttime temps will be steady in the upper 20s. Statewide, sunny with highs ranging from the lower 20s to upper 20s. Lows at night in the mid teens to upper 20s. More on Updraft. | Forecast

Most abuse of the elderly is by children or family. MPR News’ Peter Cox reports on the scope of Minnesota’s elder abuse problem — which affects about 1 in 10 older people — and what the latest research shows.

Amy Klobuchar has made the most select pool of presidential contenders so far. The senator and five other candidates — Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — have qualified for the Dec. 19 debate so far. That’s four fewer than the number who will be in next week’s debate.

Remember: lake ice is not safe yet. As Updraft’s Ron Trenda reminds us, at least 4 inches of new ice are necessary to support a person’s weight. Anything more requires at least another inch, and don’t even think about driving on ice until it’s a foot thick.

A bitter harvest for sugarbeet farmers
Dan Gunderson | MPR News
It’s been a tough harvest for every crop grown in the region. Farmers fought through mud to harvest crops during a wet fall, and this year’s sugarbeet losses come on top of several years of low crop prices and an ongoing trade war with China.

11 a.m. — MPR News with Angela Davis

Thursday was Give to the Max Day in Minnesota and many people donated to their favorite organizations. But millennials and Generation Xers are donating differently. How will nonprofits keep and retain a younger generation of givers? An auctioneer and a philanthropist join MPR News host Angela Davis in studio to talk about how charitable giving is changing and what organizations can do to make them still relevant.
