Plus: Queerness, celibacy and sexual addiction in Christianity
| What's in a name? | For a long time, journalist and disability advocate Eliza Hull didn’t want to be called disabled. At the age of five she was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a nervous system disorder that means she walks differently, falls over regularly, and has low muscle tone. Now, she tells Life Matters, she identifies as “a proud disabled woman” – but she knows a lot of people who see that word differently. Eliza’s investigation of the language of disability is just one of the stories you can hear on RN this week, as part of the ABC’s celebration of the International Day of People with a Disability. This week we’re also sharing the first episode of Faith & Fornication, a new video series exploring how young, devout Australians navigate dating and sex. RN’s Siobhan Marin interviews a young Catholic woman who was addicted to pornography, a queer actor who grew up being told to “hate the sin” of homosexuality, and a celibate deacon who’s done her PhD on singleness and the church. And if you’re reading this on Saturday morning, and you’re in Townsville, you might be lucky enough to get one of the last (free) tickets to our first Ockham’s Razor live event in many months. Get all the details here. Until next time, Rosie Ryan, digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! | |
