Dear Supporter, Thank you to everyone who has already given so generously to support families dealing with Pakistan’s deadly monsoonal floods. My colleagues on the ground are reporting that the scale of the devastation is unimaginable. Almost one million homes have been destroyed or damaged. Many people are sleeping out in the open, waiting for help, while others are cramming into relief camps or staying with hosts. UNHCR is providing emergency relief items for displaced families, such as tents, tarpaulins and sleeping mats. With our sister agencies, UNICEF and UNFPA, we are also providing psychosocial support, distributing sanitary products to women and girls, and supporting family tracing.
“That night was unforgettable as our house was inundated within minutes. We had no other option but to leave at once.” Bahadur Khan is one of the 20,000 Afghans living in a refugee village in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. When the Kabul River broke through an embankment, he had just 10 minutes to evacuate his family. They found higher ground and slept out in the open until UNHCR teams arrived the next day with provisions. “We are thankful for the tents and shelter, and a mosquito net, but there are lots of problems we are facing here,” Bahadur says. “We are sleeping on the ground. We don’t have clean drinking water or medical facilities. We can’t get food on a daily basis.”
UNHCR has already provided 71,000 relief items, but with heavy rains continuing, we urgently need more support. Your gift can provide flood survivors with shelter, cooking stoves, sanitary products, solar lamps and other essentials. Thank you for standing with the people of Pakistan as they face this catastrophic flooding – your gifts can provide urgent relief. Yours sincerely,
Trudi Mitchell CEO
P.S. UNHCR has already delivered 10,000 tents to help people whose homes have been destroyed or damaged, but many more need our help. Please donate now to provide safe shelter for Pakistani families.
