In a South African exclusive, How I Met Your Father stars Tom Ainsley and Chris Lowell talk to Channel24's Bronwyn McKay about their love for South Africa, rebooting a fan-favourite sitcom, and what the world will look like in 2050. In a streaming climate full of reboots, spin-offs, prequels and sequels, it was only a matter of time before How I Met Your Mother, one of the most beloved sitcoms from the 2000s, was given a makeover. Similar to its predecessor, How I Met Your Father centres on Sophie (Kim Cattrall) telling her son the story of how she met his father: A story that catapults us back to the year 2021, where Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her close-knit group of friends are figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options. 'South Africa is my favourite place in the world' Before even getting into what fans will love about the new group of friends on the block, the show's stars can't help but gush over how much they love South Africa. "My father's side of the family are all from South Africa," Tom Ainsley tells Channel24, adding that when he saw South Africa on the interview list, he thought, "Yay, some Afrikaans!" Sharing more about a recent trip to SA for work and to visit his family in Cape Town, Ainsley reveals that "South Africa is my favourite country. It's my favourite place in the world. I love it. I would like to maybe live there one day". Ainsley's co-star Chris Lowell echoed his sentiments, revealing that he had visited Cape Town in 2017 when there was a major water shortage. "I fricking love South Africa! I was there at the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018. And it was when Cape Town was getting really low on water. "It was a spooky, spooky time. But then you guys figured it out. Y'all can't do anything wrong." 'We couldn't tell the same story because the world isn't the same' Right, back to the show. According to Ainsley, who plays Charlie in the spin-off, while HIMYF makes a great effort to pay homage to the show that came before it, it was a "necessity to make a new show".
