2030 Winter Olympics bid timeline: Countdown to a choice that’s not coming anytime soon |
|
| | Despite the International Olympic Committee repeatedly shuffling around the 2030 Winter Games bid announcement, is has pushed it back even further, likely to 2024. This leads some to believe that it may make a joint announcement for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games. This delay also gives more time for Sapporo, which some say is the IOC's favored candidate, to get past the bribery scandal that has gotten in the way of a successful bid. Salt Lake City is still in the running to play host to the 2030 Winter Games and Utah's bid team is still hard at work. Fraser Bullock, president and CEO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, said, “We believe we have all the pieces to be a fantastic host of the Games, either in 2030 or 2034.” This decision has been long in the making, with its roots reaching back to 2018. |

| After 15 rounds of voting, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California became the newly elected Speaker of the House, winning on a 216-212 vote, with six members voting present. Speaker McCarthy's victory comes after days of negotiating with his fellow GOP party members, with no shortage of tense moments on the House floor. So what do Utah's four GOP congressmen have to say about Speaker McCarthy's win? Rep. Chris Stewart: "Speaker McCarthy knows what it means to work hard. He knows what it means to set substantial, conservative goals. And he knows what it means to achieve them," Stewart tweeted Saturday morning. Rep. Burgess Owens: "Congratulations to our new Speaker of the House, @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy. Let’s get to work! 🇺🇸" Owens tweeted Friday night. Rep. Blake Moore: “He is the right leader to push our conference’s agenda to lower energy costs, address our border crisis, and get our debt and deficit challenges under control,” Moore said. Rep. John Curtis: “The next two years may be challenging, but I am determined to contribute to positive change in our country,” Curtis said in a statement.
