MN Supreme Court hears lawsuit seeking more police in Minneapolis

The Minnesota Supreme Court heard arguments today in a lawsuit from some Minneapolis residents alleging that the city is required by its charter to bring on more cops.

A district court ruling on the lawsuit ordering the city to comply with the charter was overturned by an appeals court in March.

Attorney James Dickey of the Upper Midwest Law Center told the court that current staffing levels are about 120 officers less than his clients believe are required.

Minneapolis attorneys are arguing that the appeals court decision should be upheld, and that the charter requirement relates only to funding but the mayor has discretion on police staffing levels.
