What's it like being a comedian in 2020?

Matt Wilstein again, writing to share some exciting updates about my Daily Beast podcast The Last Laugh.

Interviewing the biggest names in comedy during this insane moment in history—from a global pandemic, to massive protests against systemic racism, to an unprecedented presidential election—has been truly eye-opening.

Recent highlights

Larry Wilmore broke down how he believes the coronavirus has upended the 2020 presidential race. While he was one of the only late-night hosts to predict a Trump victory in 2016, he’s feeling a bit more hopeful this time. “The incumbent always has an advantage,” Wilmore told me. “Before [the coronavirus], Trump was a lock, as far as I was concerned.” But he’s not holding his breath. “We always seem to get what we deserve, unfortunately,” he added with a laugh.

Chelsea Handler spoke openly and honestly about acknowledging her own white privilege amidst the George Floyd protests. “That was a big wake-up call about how asleep at the wheel I was. Here I am thinking I’m woke. It’s like, no, you’re not,” she said. “What I learned was that it’s always important to ask a question. Don’t worry about being an idiot. Who cares? That's your ego. It doesn’t matter.”

And Ricky Gervais explained why he has no interest in telling jokes about the pandemic. “I think there’s going to be about 30 novels and bad movies and bad series about the pandemic. I don’t think we need another one.” While he says his new stand-up hour may also include a “mention” of the story that changed the world, he promises, “I’m not gonna do a special about coronavirus.”
