Even as telecom providers tout their consumer 5G networks, enterprise 5G is still getting off the ground. The high-speed mobile networks will let machines in automated factories or industrial settings make snap decisions in a way that isn’t possible with Wi-Fi or cables. But network operators don’t want to build out infrastructure until there are apps available, says Oracle’s Andrew De La Torre, Group VP for communications technology, while mobile application developers are waiting for core networks to move to 5G. “With 5G, we’re trying to build a brand-new ecosystem,” he says. As for the slower rollout: “I’m not surprised. No one wants to invest and commit until they see movement on the other side.” Major business benefits await. 5G networks are set to connect cars, factory floors, and remote industrial equipment at much higher speeds and with many more sensors on a network than with 4G. This fifth-generation technology is considered more reliable than Wi-Fi for factories, outdoor rigs, mines, or ports. 5G networks are also more dynamic and configurable and expose more data for analysis, De La Torre says. In the automotive sector, connected factory floors can operate faster and more efficiently. In healthcare, 5G can help providers, such as Oracle Health, offer a more connected hospital system. There also are opportunities in construction, utilities, and oil and gas.
New rules for reporting greenhouse gas emissions, climate goals, and climate-related risks mean ESG plans are no longer a “nice to have,” says Oracle’s Devin Potter. What changes are next?
Uncertainties abound: inflation, supply chain snarls, geopolitical turmoil, and technology disruptions. Scenario planning in enterprise performance management software can help you find a path through.
