The Bible is my top resource for leadership lessons. The vulnerability and endurance of Moses as he led the children of Israel out of Egypt -- persisting through criticism and his own bouts with doubt. The grace and patience Jesus displayed as he managed the myriad personalities among the disciples. (Peter alone would have worn me out.)

Another favorite is Kevin Garnett’s KG: A to Z: An Uncensored Encyclopedia of Life, Basketball, and Everything in Between. It’s full of jewels.

Be unselfish, he says, using the example of the double team. A selfish player facing a double team will try and dribble through it and risks a turnover. But an unselfish player will see the unguarded teammate and feed him the ball. He’ll eschew personal glory for the good of the team victory.

Don’t settle for what you can do -- get good at what you think you can’t do or isn’t expected of you, he says. This lesson he learned from his mentor, NBA great Kevin McHale. “Be a four that can handle the ball. Be a four that can pass the ball,” McHale told him. KG learned the utility of being creative and nimble. It made him unpredictable and lethal and helped him create scoring opportunities on the floor.
