Humans need to belong.

We need to belong to other humans, united in pursuit of a shared mission and a shared purpose. 

We are community-generating machines.

The community means safety. It means insurance against risk. It means people who can catch us when we fall, and help lift us up when we’re on the ground. 

This need is universal: everyone, at all times, and under any circumstances will feel it.

This need is never-ending: it’s not a “one-and-done” need, but a constant calling to connect.
In The Culture Code, Dan Coyle tells us about belonging cues: micro-behaviors signaling to us that we belong here.

Belonging cues create psychological safety, and psychological safety is the key to a successful culture. 

In fact, culture is community, and community is culture.

Bonus Link: As we write here, civility is starting to seem like a long-lost relic of the past, and that is not a good sign for the health of human communities.
