Hi John!

Leaving behind? Taking up?

I'm curious about your New Year.

But first...

In this week's email:

Cartoon: Of course this means you!
Dad Joke: Oh, you want privacy????
Video: Naughty or nice?
Letter: Drop & Pick Up
Original: Branches and Roots

CARTOON OF THE WEEK

of course this means you too

OF COURSE THIS MEANS YOU TOO

Of course this means you too is one of my popular Christmas cartoon prints. It went kind of viral on my NakedPastor Facebook page and attracted a swarm of hateful comments from LGBTQ+-phobes.

Even though it happens every day, I still find it very discouraging when this happens. The level of hate and even plain human unkindness from Christians still baffles me.

My daughter Casile helped me moderate the comment section in an attempt to keep my page feeling as safe as possible.

Why is “love is love” such a hard concept to grasp?

DAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

My wife doesn’t think I give her enough privacy.

At least that’s what she said in her diary.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

for all my haters

In this video, I have a surprise gift for all my haters out there.

Watch... it's just a few seconds long!

Oh my! Over 11,000 likes on Instagram alone.

It is funny though. And I like the many layers of meaning this cartoon possesses.

I think it's one of my smartest ones.

ORIGINAL PAINTING: I AM LIGHT

my past and my present are one painting

My Past and My Present are One

I’m continuing to work on transferring my watercolor painting style (which is watercolor painting on paper) to acrylic paint on canvas. I’ve done a couple so far.

Here’s one I just completed last week. I call it “My Past and My Present Are One”. Notice how the long branch reaches way out to touch the one root. Almost.

I like to say I acknowledge my roots but I don’t let them limit me.

Hey… if you want this painting… I’ll give you $100 towards it. Just use coupon code ‘PASTPRESENT’ to claim it on this painting when you check out. It expires midnight my time New Years Eve.

DROPPING AND PICKING UP

Last week, when I shared a post about who Timber is, I said that this week I was going to talk more about the suppression of the feminine in Christianity and the Church. I think this topic is important and I look forward to talking about it. But I forgot that we are on the eve of a new year, and I’d rather address that now instead. So I will talk about the feminine next week.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Now for the New Year!

Oh my dear friends. I just want to thank you for quite a year. I have found it both tough in some ways and joyful in others.

The tough parts have to do with my own personal struggles, but also with the growing awareness of hate in the world as my reach increases.

The joyful parts have to do with watching NakedPastor grow, as well as with love… of those who are close to me geographically and those who are not… including YOU!

Seriously… when you respond and we connect on a more personal level, it means so much to me. I feel like I’ve made a new friend.

As much as the internet has its downfalls, I’m also grateful for it. Mainly because it helps me get closer to you and helps you get closer to me. And that means a ton to me.

So I’m going to ask you a couple questions… and I’ll answer them first.

As we go into 2023…

What are you going to leave behind?

What are you going to start new?

For me, I’m going to leave behind self-pity. I’ve discovered that is my default setting, and so I plan on leaving that behind… as much as I am able. I don’t mean living in denial of it, but putting it in its place.

What am I going to start new? I’m going to ramp up my self-care regimen. I’m talking physical health, mental health, spiritual health, social health, financial health… all of it.

I turned 65 in October. I can’t believe it! But I intend on making my life even better and better as much as I am able.

Your turn? What are you going to leave behind and take up?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“The only thing more contagious than a good attitude is a bad one” (David Goggins).

I just finished reading David Goggins’ new book, “Never Finished.” A fantastically inspiring read from a man who grew up in a terribly abusive home and suffered unbelievably hardships to eventually become a person considered to be the toughest man alive. If you’re into inspirational and motivational reading… not just for physical health but mental, emotional, spiritual, and more, this is a fascinating read unlike the other fluffy feel-good sugary material that’s out there. This book… well… Goggins… is pushing me to be the best version of myself.

A FINAL NOTE

We're at the end of 2022.

This last year has been tough on a lot of you.

So... I hope this next one is easier and happier.

Let's all do what we can to make it so... not only for ourselves but for others.

Much love, my friends!

David
