Ex-Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali is going to be Formula 1’s next boss and is a great hire – he’s highly intelligent, very articulate and possesses a proven track record of getting things done both in racing and the automotive industry. His arrival should be smooth, as the heavy lifting of sorting out the Concorde Agreement has already been done. He’s on easy street, right? Well, this is F1… As Ron Dennis famously said to Eddie Jordan when he arrived in 1991: ‘Welcome to the piranha club’. Everyone is trying to devour what’s on offer for themselves, and the ethos of the sport is pushing the boundaries to get away with what you can. The Racing Point brake duct saga was a classic case in point, with the team insisting it was whiter than white (pinker than pink?), appealing against its penalty until the fuss died down and then withdrawing it despite claiming innocence. As Zak Brown points out in our story, isn’t that “inconsistent with their intentions”? Along with keeping the FIA on its toes, Domenicali is going to have to deal with attacks and counter-moves like this on a daily basis. He might be the biggest fish in the tank now, but he’s going to have to keep all those pesky little nibblers in check! Good luck with that, Stefano… Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
