The self-employed roofing contractor has been ordered to undertake unpaid work. This followed the uncontrolled spread of asbestos in a back garden, which put 2 young workers and local residents at risk. Doorbell-cam footage shows parts of an old garage roof being disposed of with a lack of control measures. Watch a video of the footage and read more about the incident in our press release: Contractor sentenced after uncontrolled spread of asbestos. Global Asbestos Awareness Week is 1 to 7 April. HSE's Asbestos and You campaign provides essential advice and resources to help workers stay safe and reminds tradespeople about the dangers of asbestos and the importance of working safely with it. You can visit our news centre for more on recent enforcement cases, which include: Employers must prioritise the health and safety of gig economy, agency and temporary workers. Workers are as likely to experience an accident in the first 6 months at a workplace as they are over the rest of their working life. HSE's website has guidance on 6 ways to protect those who are new to the job. We also have advice to help users and suppliers of agency and temporary workers understand their health and safety responsibilities. If you are an agency or temporary worker, the law safeguards your health and safety, and employment businesses (agencies) must ensure they follow health and safety requirements for every agency or temporary worker. All employers must provide toilets, washbasins and other welfare facilities that workers require. Employers must also provide a working environment that's healthy and safe for everyone in the workplace, including disabled people. This means you must have: - welfare facilities
- a healthy working environmentÂ
- a safe workplace
Find out in more detail what you must provide for a safe and healthy workplace. Employers are also required to provide enough toilets and washbasins for those expected to use them. Follow our guidance for toilets and washing facilities. |
