21 September 2022 Your key COVID-19 report COVID-19 Reports UpdateAccess all reportsWeekly Epidemiological Update21 SeptemberGlobally, the number of new weekly cases remained stable during the week of 12 to 18 September 2022 as compared to the previous week, with over 3.2 million new cases reported. The number of new weekly deaths decreased by 17% as compared to the previous week, with over 9800 fatalities reported. As of 18 September 2022, over 609 million confirmed cases and over 6.5 million deaths have been reported globally. The recent reappearance of poliovirus in the United States and other countries long free of the paralyzing disease are “a disturbing reminder that until polio is eradicated everywhere, it remains a threat everywhere,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Support from contributors – among them the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the US Centers for Disease Control, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Rotary International – is helping countries reach children with vaccines and monitor communities for the presence of wild and vaccine-derived poliovirus.
