| Inflation fears Philippa Aylmer took a reading on the many opinions of those in the asset management world on rising inflation in the UK. She writes that inflation is now more than double the Bank of England’s inflation target and with continued supply bottle necks, labour shortages and rising commodity prices, inflation is expected to rise even further. The Bank of England expects 5 per cent by spring next year and the Bank’s governor Andrew Bailey has admitted he’s worried by the figures and had given serious thought to hiking rates earlier this month. "This expectation which will send a chill through many households already feeling the painful squeeze" says Danni Hewson, AJ Bell financial analyst, "but the question is what good would it do. Very little in the immediate aftermath seems to be the answer especially as a rate rise wouldn’t solve the global chip shortage, geo-political tensions or shortages of crucial supplies like gas." It's a bit gloomy out there but Henry Biddle and Martin Todd, Sustainable Global Equity Portfolio Managers, at the international business of Federated Hermes, bring us their views on the investment theme of financial inclusion, which they say is a logical theme for investors wanting to do good and do well. "It has been shown to reduce inequalities, eliminate hunger and improve wellbeing. Access to formal financial services can in turn boost access to clean water and sanitation, affordable energy, and quality education. No wonder that The United Nations has linked financial inclusion to progress on 13 of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals," the pair write. "Boosting financial inclusion is a significant economic opportunity. Bringing up to 1.7 billion people, or a third of the world’s population, into the financial system has the potential to generate 95 million jobs as well as boost global GDP by USD3.7 trillion by 2025. That is an attractive proposition for investors, at a time when the world economy is being held back by a worsening health situation in developing countries and supply chain disruptions."
