You could be forgiven for thinking this was a headline from the front page of The Canberra Times over the past few weeks. In fact, it is a report from this day in 1994 when bushfires were raging across the South Coast. NSW Bushfires Services commissioner Phil Koperberg said that it was the worst bushfire emergency in 50 years, with firefighters working through the night in Malua Bay, Lilli Pilli, Surf Beach and Batehaven. Families in the area sought refuge on the beaches as the 12km long and 3km wide fire raged nearby.  READ MORE
