Your Wednesday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Oct 6, 2021 | | | | | | Good evening, We have heard much about the Prime Minister’s levelling up agenda since the General Election of 2019. To be fair, quite a bit has happened since then to take his eye off the disparity of opportunity between those of us who live in the North and our cousins in the South. But actually, the pandemic has only highlighted the geographic gaps across the country, with more people in the North contracting Covid, being admitted to hospital and dying from the virus. In his speech to conference today, Boris Johnson highlighted that people in Blackpool have a much lower life expectancy than those living just 30 miles away in the more affluent Ribble Valley and the need to close the gap to ensure this does not continue. While many will say we have heard all this before (and we have) at least it is being debated. Now we need to go one step further and get action to change people’s lives for the better. That almost always starts with Education. It provides the opportunities to escape poverty and potential ill-health. Invest in that and you invest in a brighter future - for all. Until next time, take care, Gillian Contact me at [email protected] | |
