OUR OCEANS NEED A WAVE OF CHANGE.

Last week, governments, businesses, and NGOs met in Norway for the 2019 Our Ocean Conference to discuss how we can secure the future of the oceans.

Whether you spoke up to urge leaders to
stop plastic pollution, or joined the many people around the world who are calling on leaders to take greater action for nature in *2020, we wanted to say thank you for making a difference.

An update on what happened

1. Momentum builds behind global treaty to combat marine plastic pollution
Grenada, Norway and Sweden made a commitment to work for the establishment of a global, legally binding treaty by 2023 to combat marine plastic pollution. This marked an important step towards a meaningful global response to the scourge of plastic pollution in our oceans and signals the growing recognition that a legally binding treaty is a necessary and viable solution to this crisis. 1.5 million people have already joined us in calling for states to start negotiating a new treaty.

2. Bold commitments on ocean conservation ahead of a critical year for nature
The Our Ocean conference saw a series of impressive commitments. Over the last five years at Our Ocean, financial commitments to ocean conservation in excess of $17 billion have been made, in addition to promises to create more than 13 million square kilometres of marine protected areas.

"Unless concerted international action is taken to reverse the decline in ocean health, restore and rebuild its resilience, and arrest the unsustainable exploitation of our oceans, we won’t be able to secure healthy oceans to benefit people and nature." - John Tanzer, Leader, Oceans at WWF.

*World leaders are scheduled to make critical decisions on nature, climate and development in 2020, offering a momentous opportunity to secure a sustainable future for our planet, together with the people and wildlife who depend on them.
