The Lunch Line: Watching (and hating) Hurricane Ida. Arrests made in NOPD officer slaying

By Bob Warren

The latest on Hurricane Ida: Like everyone else, we’re nervously watching Hurricane Ida. Here’s what you need to know right now:

  • The storm could be packing quite the punch. They’re talking Cat 4 status now.
  • Wondering what kind of weather you might see? Here’s a parish-by-parish look.
  • Across the region, folks are picking up sandbags. And schools have started cancelling classes.
  • Oh, and the Saints are still playing on Saturday – but have moved the start time in the Caesars Superdome to noon.

Taysom? Jameis? Speaking of the Saints, Coach Sean Payton has decided the winner of the Taysom Hill-Jameis Winston quarterback derby. And it’s. . .Winston.

Big arrests: Houston police said this morning that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the botched armed robbery that resulted in the shooting death of Everett Briscoe, an off-duty New Orleans police detective, and left one of his friends seriously injured.

Tourism tumbles: The latest surge in COVID cases and the subsequent festival cancellations have done a number on airport bookings and hotel occupancy. Business writer Tony McAuley says the tourism industry is hoping that football and conventions later in the year will provide a bit of a rebound.

Sweet sounds: The big music festivals for the fall have been canceled, but perhaps the music can still go on. Local venues and teaming with New Orleans & Co. to present NOLAxNOLA, a series of concerts from Oct. 7-17, our music guy Keith Spera reports.

Hope you enjoyed the Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us.
