How John Deere Conquered 5G for Manufacturing

John Deere's Waterloo, Iowa, tractor plant didn't have data cables snaking through the facility when it started production in 1893 (then part of the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Co.), so why should it need them now? Instead, the company uses a private 5G network to move massive amounts of production data to critical management systems.

The 5G network sends signals to automated guided vehicle (AGV) navigation, collects data for test results and improves manufacturing efficiency. In this episode, Jason Wallin, John Deere’s chief architect at Waterloo Works, shares how the manufacturer decided to deploy 5G technology and develop the internal expertise to manage the network without assistance from vendors.
