| WISH has revised their guidance on managing health and safety at household waste recycling centres (HWRC)/civic amenity (CA) sites. In April 2024 WISH reviewed and updated its guidance on managing health and safety at HWRC sites (WISH 26). You can download the guidance from the WISH website (.pdf) Following an incident in 2023 WISH have released a safety alert on the maintenance of and working under top hinged hydraulic rear doors. The safety alert is aimed at organisations in the waste and recycling sector operating vehicles with hydraulically operated rear doors, hatches, body sections etc. It follows a fatal accident when a person was working under the top-hinged hydraulically powered rear door of a road sweeper. View the safety alert at the WISH website (.pdf) The scrap metal recycling company has been fined 200,000 after a worker's arm was severed when it became entangled in a catalytic converter sampling machine. HSE's investigation found that the company failed to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery, namely the rotating parts of a rotary valve inside the sampling machine.
