Rock, paper, lawsuit: Canadian court throws out bad bet Do you play bingo or bet on things like sports? How about games like rock-paper-scissors? Well, believe it or not, there is a contingency of people willing to bet hundreds of thousands of dollars on this ancient game, but a new ruling fresh out of Canadian appeals courts makes it unlikely that rock-paper-scissors gamblers will be able to seriously collect. In 2011, a man who had lost a bet worth $517,000 on a rock-paper-scissors game had been forced to refinance his mortgage to meet the expenses of his costly gamble. Canadian courts were willing to listen to his appeal, and after nine years of deliberation, a judge expunged his debts. How? The answer lies in Canadian law, which declares that betting can only take place in regards to games of skill, not games of chance. This proved to be the most complex part of the argument, but ultimately, the judge was moved by how excessive the costs seemed to be for such a petty thing. If you are in debt for something small and stupid, it might be high time to move to Canada. On the flip side, if you want to consistently win at rock-paper-scissors bets, here’s how. Tap or click here to see the best way to win consistently at this classic game. → |
