Catching the Northern Lights |
Between the Perseid meteor shower reaching its peak and the Northern Lights, Michigan's skies are having quite the dazzling display this week. If you missed the show, the meteor shower will still be visible in the night sky until the end of August. A G3 geomagnetic storm started hitting earth Sunday night. The stronger than expected storm sparked the light show that could be seen as far as Grand Rapids to Lansing and Southeast Michigan. Here's a roundup of the best pictures of the Northern Lights that have been shared with us by MLive readers so far. |

Want to photograph the Perseids? Tips for taking meteor shower pictures |
Camera ready: With the peak of the Perseid meteor shower occurring over the weekend, dazzling photographs are circulating across social media. However, if you’ve ever tried to get pictures of any astronomical phenomena, you know that it’s easier said than done. Here are a few key tips from NASA for successfully capturing the Perseids as they continue to light up the night sky. Looking ahead: The Farmers’ Almanac has released its Winter 2025 Extended Weather Forecast, calling for an active season for much of the country. They’re calling for above average precipitation for Michigan. Depending on the storm tracks, this could mean a lot of snow or a lot of rain. Weather changes: Our forecast is showing another cool weather area coming south out of Canada later this week into the weekend. We will have warm days in the 80s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These days will also have low humidity. Saturday will have afternoon highs in the 60s and low-70s. |

Over-the-counter birth control pills would be more accessible in Michigan under Democrats plan |
Greater access: People would have cheaper access to over-the-counter birth control pills under new legislation proposed by Democrats in the state Senate. The pair of bills introduced July 30 would require insurers in the state to provide coverage for hormonal and emergency contraception pills with or without a prescription. False claims: On his social media platform Truth Social, former President Donald Trump falsely claimed “there was nobody there” during Vice President Kamala Harris' Detroit Metropolitan Airport rally last week. In another post, Trump claimed the Harris campaign “cheated” and generated crowds via artificial intelligence. The Harris campaign said about 15,000 people attended. Coming this week: U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, the running mate to Donald Trump, will be swinging through Michigan again. Vance is scheduled to campaign in Byron Center, about 15 miles south of Grand Rapids, on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Trump campaign announced. |

Change in Michigan football ticket resale rules cost buyer $2.5M, lawsuit alleges |
Big bucks: A federal lawsuit alleges a change in University of Michigan football season ticket policy will cost a ticket holder and reseller at least $2.5 million in lost revenue. Kevin Brick and his North Carolina-based ticket resale company Maxim Tickets, Inc. has sued the university for violation of the Michigan Consumer Protection Act, according to an Aug. 9 complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. More details: Without warning earlier this year, Brick said, the athletic department prohibited people from buying tickets solely to resell them and blocked him from his tickets. Since he bought hundreds of tickets for 21 years, Brick alleges this policy change misled him into spending millions of dollars without the possibility of making the money back. In pro football: The Detroit Lions waived injured offensive lineman Connor Galvin and placed edge rusher Nate Lynn on injured reserve, signaling the end of each young player’s season. |

Mackinac Island's new winning fudge name has a touch of the devil in it |
New name: More than 6,000 entries for the Mackinac Island’s annual fudge-naming contest poured in this summer, and one moniker has been picked ahead of this month’s Fudge Festival. Devil’s Kitchen Delight is named after one of the iconic rock formations along the M-185 perimeter road. You can find the sweet treat during the Fudge Festival, which runs Aug. 23-25. Sweet treats: The Holland Peanut Store is known for bringing specialty, imported sweets to West Michigan. This summer they brought viral TikTok sensation Bubs to the counter. But this candy is so popular, there’s a limit to how much customers can buy. Sugar rush: If you're looking for more than fudge or Bubs to fix your sweet tooth, head to Concord to visit Sattler’s Tasty Treat for sundaes, flurries, milkshakes and more. Try swapping out a morning donut for a soft, jumbo cookie from Heidi’s Darn Good Cookies in Bay City. |
