Friday 27 May 2022 Deputy Mayor's MessageWelcome to the May edition of Wanneroo Link. In this month’s edition, we celebrate an award winning City initiative, share our new Customer First approach, 'uncover' an exciting new recycling initiative and mark the start of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June). This year’s theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change.' It’s a challenge to all Australians to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians. Deputy Mayor Brett Treby Celebrate National Reconciliation WeekToday marks the start of National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. We at the City are proud of our significant Aboriginal heritage and look forward to celebrating the rich and ongoing legacy of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week, the City is running a range of programs including an 'It’s All About Stories' session at Wanneroo Library on Thursday 2 June, which will feature a reading of ‘Wanjoo’ by Gina Williams. The picture book aims to teach children and adults some of the words of welcome to Noongar country through ‘Wanjoo’, a song the author wrote in Noongar language. The City's eLibrary has also launched a new curated set of online resources highlighting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and information. Activities will also be running at the City’s four youth centres. Young people can drop in to learn how to make damper and native lemon myrtle butter biscuits or create a collaborative art piece that reflects their thoughts and perspectives on Reconciliation Week.
