Mayor Linda Aitken New Alkimos aquatic centre makes a splashThe much-anticipated Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre is a step closer after a Council meeting held this month. Council progressed the land acquisition for AARC, appointed Donovan Payne Architects to deliver the project’s detailed design and selected two businesses to carry out cost planner services on the project. Read moreSporting upgrades for local clubsTwo popular local sporting facilities will soon receive upgrades, after the City successfully secured funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. New fire danger signs to improve community safetyNine upgraded Fire Danger Rating signs are currently being installed across the City. The upgraded electronic signs, received from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), will improve public safety and help reduce the impacts of bushfires. The signs feature four simplified ratings and wirelessly receive bushfire rating data directly from DFES. New sign locationsCity calls on community to never bin a batteryDid you know that incorrectly disposing of batteries is the most common cause of truck fires in the City? Since the start of this year, incorrectly binned batteries have caused fires in five City waste trucks, with some particularly close calls in busy residential areas. It’s up to all of us to do the right thing and help make sure this doesn’t happen again. Our community services and conservation volunteers assist with community events, JP signing services, maintaining our reserves through tree planting, weeding and revegetation, providing community transport to seniors and much more.
