BoldBrush Recommends: Wanda Ann KinnamanBiographyI'm Wanda Ann, an encaustic mixed media artist living in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina in the U.S. Chances are if you don't find me in the studio, I am out seeking open spaces or quiet places with my camera and a journal sketchbook along with my constant companions, Ezekiel, a gentle giant Great Dane, and Deliah Jones, a Border Collie/Labrador mix. Whether I'm in or out of the studio I'm questioning and diving into the mysteries of places found on the roads less traveled along with those that are so familiar they are often overlooked. My original, unreproducible, and unique mixed-media encaustic (beeswax) paintings are primarily nature-inspired, with a focus on plants and animals. The natural subject matter is collected through experiences, photography, and sketches that are observed during my travels, mostly on foot. In the studio, I reimagine my observations, sketches, and collections into hand-rendered digital composites that develop into paintings that dance a finely tuned balance of ancient media of encaustic (beeswax) and traditional media as I work with hand-painted layers of wax, oil pigments, and other media such as metal leafing to cocoon and transform the work with elements of dream-like qualities and layers of textured meanings that are unreproducible. As I explore these concepts, I share both my experiences and findings with others to see beyond realism to learn new ways of seeing life with eyes that look deeper and seek to make connections to the created world through memory and mystery of the places found on the roads less traveled along with those so familiar they are overlooked. |
