School Athletics Over the last year, COPSSA (Central Otago Primary Schools Sports Association) has been reviewing its sports events calendar and will be implementing some key changes. This is the statement released to explain the decision to move the Central Otago Athletic Championships to Term 1: 'Moving Athletics to Term 1 was a consensus through consultation and feedback by School Reps and Zones Reps across the 3 zones, with weather implications a determining factor. The decision not to hold Central Otago Championships in Term 4 of 2019 was made by the Zone Reps and the COPSSA Executive, after considering the pressure back to back events would have on schools and particularly the school charged with running the event.' COPSSA have also made the decision to change from competition by age, to competing in year groups to align with all the 'other' events. Considering these factors, we have decided to run our school athletic events in term 1 to align the progression through to the Upper Clutha zone event and then the CO Championship event. For our current Year 6, we are planning an athletics event, inviting Holy Family and Hawea Flat students to join us. This will be held towards the end of term 4 - more details and a date will be available in the first newsletter of term 4. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. |

Cupcake Fundraiser Pod 2 would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported their Cupcake Fundraiser on Friday. They were overwhelmed with customers and raised just short of $500. Many thanks to all the Pod 2 parents who contributed baking and to those who helped with the set up and sale. We were very proud of the Pod 2 children. They really exhibited the value of citizenship, realising that this day was about the gift of giving. We will donate the money to a variety of local animal welfare organisations and will let you know more once we have organised this. |

Pod 6 and Cultural Diversity This term Pod 6 have been learning about cultural diversity. Their NPDL focus has been around one of the 6Cs (global competency) citizenship - ‘understanding different values and world views’ and ‘global perspective’. The children completed a project on a country of choice and yesterday they shared their work and had a morning tea with food from around the world.

Great Results for WPS at Cardrona Windy conditions and firm, fast snow did little to deter almost 200 young athletes in 53 teams tackling a giant slalom and boardercross for this year’s Upper Clutha Primary School Fun Ski & Snowboard Race at Cardrona last Tuesday. As well as local schools, teams from Alexandra and Twizel travelled to take part in the annual Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club event with abilities ranging from race novices to seasoned competitors. Mathilda Watterson with a combined time of 53.08 was the fastest female and overall skier on the day and Jared Ferguson coming in at 53.22 was the fastest male. Cam Melville Ives was the fastest male snowboarder with a combined time of 1:04.53 with Suki Leigh in a time of 1:25.78 the fastest female. Team Pringles made up of Isabel Watterson, Jared Ferguson, Fleur Jansen and Daisy Woods were the fastest ski team in a combined time of 2:53.05 with The Noobs made up of Kazuma Saka, Harry Rowden, Liam Grimmett and Logan Millar representing Wanaka Primary School just 0.05 behind them for second. The Noobs effort with two injured team members, including one with a broken arm, meant they took away the Ski Connect team cup for sporting spirit this year. On behalf of the Wanaka Ski & Snowsports Club, thank you so much to each and every one of you. Competitors, parents, managers, teachers, Cardrona Events crew, sponsors Outside Sports Wanaka, Snow Sports NZ and volunteers are a massive part of making the day a huge success. Congratulations to Charlie Charlie raced in the NZ Schools Cross Country Ski Champs last weekend. He was really excited to retain his title as the Primary School boys champion with his win in the classic and skate races. He also competed in the Merino Muster 7km race and came second in the U12 boys and won the Mini muster which is a 1km sprint for kids 10 and under. And he competed in the Kangaroo Hoppet 7km Joey race in Australia in August and came 8th in his age group which he was really happy about as there were a lot more children competing over there.
