The latest in food retail | CONSUMER TRENDS | | July price inflation eases, but not for grocery Food-at-home CPI up 13.1% year over year, 1.1% since June. IRI’s latest findings show that consumers are shifting away from national brands in categories where store brands are already well-known or in commodity categories. The July Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in flat from the previous month, but inflation — up again for food — remains high historically, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The month-to-month rise in the food-at-home index remained steep in 2022. All six major grocery store food group indices rose in July, BLS reported. |

RETAIL & FINANCIAL | | Walmart to open high-tech consolidation center in Pennsylvania In a major upgrade to its supply chain, Walmart this month is opening a high-tech consolidation center that will service all 42 of the retail giant’s regional distribution centers across the U.S. Walmart’s consolidation centers use automated technology to enable three times more volume to flow through the supply chain. Suppliers will now deliver merchandise to one location for consolidation instead shipping separate orders for each of the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant’s 42 regional distribution centers. |

ONLINE RETAIL | | Publix launches curbside pickup for prescriptions New pharmacy service complements grocery click-and-collect. Publix Super Markets has introduced pharmacy curbside pickup in four states. The Lakeland, Fla.-based supermarket chain said this week that the service, accessed via the Publix Pharmacy app, is now available at pharmacy stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Virginia, with selected locations excluded. Plans call for the grocer’s North and South Carolina pharmacies to launch curbside pickup at a later date. |

RETAIL & FINANCIAL | | Ahold Delhaize’s U.S. net sales climb 7.7% in Q2 CEO Frans Muller cites ‘consistent and robust performance of U.S. brands’. Global food retailer Ahold Delhaize built on a solid start to fiscal 2022 in its U.S. business with strong net, comparable and online sales growth for the second quarter. For the quarter ended July 3, net sales at Ahold Delhaize USA totaled $14.43 billion, up 7.7% (constant exchange rates) from $13.4 billion a year. “Food Lion continues to perform strongly, achieving its 39th consecutive quarter of growth and double-digit comparable sales,” said Ahold Delhaize CEO Frans Muller. |
