Hi John!

Who is this Timber woman? She keeps showing up in my dreams and now she's showing up in this email too!

But I'll introduce you to her in just a moment...

In this week's email:

Cartoon: The men that were too wise 🔭
Dad Joke: Good morning grumpy 🥱

THE WISE MEN AND ASTROLOGY

Interesting that astrologers are said to be present at the launching of the Christian religion.

But don't dare dabble in it now!

I have a lot of friends who are into it.

Me? I see things like this as helpful tools for self-awareness and personal growth.

DAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

Sometimes I wake up grumpy.

But other times I let her sleep in.

hey my beautiful friends

In this video, I discuss something really hard that happens when you start questioning your beliefs. You might need to hear this.

POST OF THE WEEK

me being me

Me being me.

Yes, this is my quote talking about myself.

But it's your quote talking about you too.

Am I right?

This inspirational poster that has one of my paintings in the background was so popular that some people asked for prints. So I made them available in my store. Just search "rebellion".

ORIGINAL PAINTING: I AM LIGHT

Timber i am light

Do you realize you are light? This Timber painting is for you.

In this watercolor, Timber stands in the realization that she is light. It isn't just a spiritual insight, but a scientific one too. It is light that is between, amongst, within, and conjoins all things. She is light. She knows that she carries as much splendor as the night sky with all its stars and Northern Lights.

Do you?

Hang this up as a reminder of the light you hold inside.

WHO IS THIS TIMBER WOMAN?

In 2012, two years after I left the ministry, I started drawing a woman fighting for her own freedom. I drew her, naked… meaning vulnerable… in the wilderness, usually with a full moon, often with creatures, but always withstanding the elements. After I drew about 10 of them, I realized I was drawing my own liberation from the church, ministry, and religion altogether. Her name is Sophia... which is Greek for wisdom, but also conjures up the divine feminine. I drew 62 drawings and gave them each a meditation, collected them into a book, and called it The Liberation of Sophia. I completed the project in 2014 when it was published.

Then, earlier this year, another woman emerged from my subconscious. This one is fully clothed in a regal robe of some kind. Her hair is white. She is innocent but not naïve. Where Sophia was in her process of personal liberation, Timber is about healing her traumas, finding her place in the world, and establishing her boundaries.

So far I’ve drawn eight of them.

Again, her name came to me as Timber. To me, it means sturdy like an oak. It also means she’ll chop down anything in the way of her own personal authenticity and freedom… her right to be in this world… and to be fully herself.

Her hair is white to represent the psychophysical ramifications of her traumas. It’s no accident my hair is white.

She is also always alone, like Sophia, because even if she is surrounded by others, this journey is fiercely an individual one.

I heard someone say once that we must heal ourselves from our traumas and what this looks like is we will then be able to remember them without reliving them. I like that. So… I sense that Timber is going to show us how to heal ourselves so that we can live life to the full here and now.

It’s also a graphic exploration and expression of the power of the feminine. This has been a deep current in my own life… and I think it is very important… crucial, even… because I claim the church suffocates the feminine in favour of the patriarchy and, as a result, everyone suffers.

I’m going to unwrap this more in next week’s letter because I want to say it clearly. It’s so important.

The originals sell fast because so many women are identifying with Timber, so I make prints available of each one too.

The latest one is called “I Am Light”, and is included in this letter.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“… the claim of self-defense not he part of those who wield power is too often a defense of power, of its prerogatives, and of the inequalities it presupposes and produces”

This is by Judith Butler in The Force of Non-Violence.

Butler’s argument for aggressive non-violence is clear and powerful. She notes that there are those living in this world who possess a self that has value, is worth defending, and whose absence would be grieved. Then there are those who have a self that is considered of little or no value, not worth defending, and “non-grievable”.

I have such an appreciation for people who speak the truth so courageously.

A FINAL NOTE

We're so incredibly close to the end of 2022. I hope you're all taking some sort of break over the next couple of weeks to reflect on how you've grown this year.

As always, I'm proud of you.

Much love, my friends!

David
