Letter from the Editor Now that we are starting the 3rd month of the year, it may be a good time to look back and see how we are doing with our New Year resolutions. Many of us thought this would be the year we lost those last 20 pounds, or finally learned to master a pivot table in Excel, or saved 10% extra from our paycheck. But how did we really do? How many times did we say we did not have time to work on our goal, and then spend 10-12 hours bingeing on a Netflix series from Newfoundland? How many of us even took 15 minutes a day to pursue that resolution? The answer is probably not many. If you need some new motivational insight on how to re-jumpstart your activity program, then check out this month’s feature from Dr. Sheri Colberg on how to get motivated to exercise when you are not. We have added a link so you can go back to part 1 of this article and, as one of my colleagues says, “refurbish your memory." ***************************** We can make a difference! ***************************** Dave Joffe Editor-in-chief |

| Did You Know? 40% of U.S. adults have obesity, government survey finds. About 4 in 10 American adults have obesity, and almost 1 in 10 severely so, government researchers said. The CDC findings come from a 2017-18 health survey that measures height and weight. The survey found that the obesity rate was 42% – higher than the 40% found in a similar 2015-16 study. The severe obesity rate was more than 9% in the new survey, up from the 8% figure in the previous one. A half-century ago, about 1 in 100 American adults had severe obesity. Now it’s ten times more common. The findings suggest that more Americans will get diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Obesity – which means not merely overweight, but severely overweight – is considered one of the nation’s leading public health problems. A person who is 5-foot-4, the average height for U.S. women, is deemed to have obesity at a weight of 174 pounds and severe obesity above 232 pounds. A person who is 5-foot-9, about the average height for men, is deemed to have obesity at 203 pounds and severe obesity at 270. CDC |
