I love everything about the Apple Vision Pro — except wearing it

Digital Trends' Giovanni Colantonio recently got some hands-on time with Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, which launches soon

If you had asked me one week ago if I planned on getting an Apple Vision Pro, I would have scoffed. Why try typing on a clumsy digital keyboard when I could work much faster on a real one? Why watch a movie on a flat screen inside a headset when I could just turn on my TV? Wildly expensive, superfluous tech is just not for me.

But after one half-hour session with the Vision Pro, I might be a changed man. Maybe it’s just the stunning resolution talking, but I can more easily see a future where the tech enhances some aspects of my life. The only thing I’m still not sold on? Actually wearing the thing.

In my hands-on session, Apple guided me through several impressive experiences across a handful of apps ...

Customer-service AI chatbot goes rogue, swears, criticizes company

International delivery firm DPD is updating its AI-powered chatbot after it gave some unexpected responses

Musician Ashley Beauchamp recently turned to DPD’s customer-service chatbot in a bid to track down a missing package.

After making little progress with it, he had some fun by asking it to write a poem criticizing the company, which it duly did. He also asked it to swear, and again, it obliged, using the F-word in its next response.

“It’s utterly useless at answering any queries,” the musician said in an online post.

DPD said that an error had occurred with its AI chatbot following a recent system update.

Beauchamp said he found the incident amusing, but added: “These chatbots are supposed to improve our lives, but so often when poorly implemented it just leads to a more frustrating, impersonal experience for the user” ...

ON THE HORIZON

Here are all the GPUs set to launch in 2024

Last year saw plenty of releases from Nvidia and AMD, including some of the best GPUs currently available. We saw some hits, but there were also cards that missed badly. What can we expect in 2024?

Nvidia’s RTX 40 series refresh hasn’t been a mystery for many months now, but Nvidia only officially unveiled it during CES 2024 earlier this month. One of the GPUs is already out, and it’s pretty great. It’s the RTX 4070 Super.

Priced at $600, the RTX 4070 Super isn’t exactly replacing its predecessor. Both graphics cards will continue being produced, but realistically, it’s easy to believe that the RTX 4070 Super will become the new go-to at that price range.

For a midrange card, this GPU unlocks access to 1440p and even 4K gaming at a more reasonable price point than some of the better models and offers a tangible improvement over the base model ...

MARS EXPLORATION

NASA manages to restore contact with its Mars helicopter

The Ingenuity helicopter flew into record books in 2021 when it became the first aircraft to perform controlled, powered flight on another planet

NASA had a worrying few days recently after losing contact with its Mars helicopter, Ingenuity. Thankfully, it’s now back in touch.

The U.S. space agency managed to restore contact with its famous helicopter after instructing its Mars rover, Perseverance, to perform "long-duration listening sessions" for Ingenuity’s signal.

The team is now reviewing the latest mission data to try to understand the cause of the communications dropout, which occurred during the helicopter’s 72nd flight on the red planet.

Ingenuity was originally sent to Mars as a technology demonstration, but it's proved so successful that NASA is expected to design more advanced versions of the aircraft for future missions ...
