Art & Humanities: Resources and Professional Development

Open Doors, Virtual Programs

Fall 2020

Dear Educators,

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s doors have reopened and the lonely artworks within have basked in the long-awaited attention of socially-distanced visitors. We continue with online-only programming which means that whether you’re in Wichita, Spokane, or Aruba, free workshops and lectures are available to you!

Scroll down for notes on upcoming free workshops (90 minutes or less!), free virtual field trips (including a new topic), and a preview of new “Thinking Through Art” resources.

You are carrying a mighty load, giving children a sense of routine and sparking curiosity. This is a gift you are giving to our world.

In gratitude and solidarity,
Elizabeth Dale-Deines
Teacher Programs Coordinator

A note from SAAM intern Victoria Cho

Victoria is a Painting (’22) and MAT (’23) student at Maryland Institute College of Art: “As an intern in SAAM’s Education Department, I’ve discovered how Learning Labs can be used to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching and engage students as they develop literacy skills and digital competency”

Victoria constructed a Learning Lab collection that: “...explains the elements of photography and instructs students on how to look for these techniques when analyzing photographs. How can this Learning Lab be modified to make it more conducive to your curriculum? What ideas or suggestions do you have for future Learning Lab collections? Let us assist you”
