Stopping the cycle: The city is reviving its violence interruption program, which uses peer mediation to resolve disputes before they escalate into gun violence. But some question whether the traditional model will be sufficient in an age where social media has taken beefs from the streets to the web. Missy Wilkinson has a look.
Seeking shelter: The east bank of Jefferson Parish has been without an animal shelter since Hurricane Ida knocked the old one out of commission almost two years ago. But some progress is being made in providing a replacement, much to the relief of local animal rescues who've been dealing with the increased number of strays in the meantime. With manpower waning, police have cleared only about third of the city's homicides since the start of 2020, and the national average is about 50%. During this period, there have been 502 murders in New Orleans that haven't resulted in an arrest, compared to 287 that have ended in an arrest or a suspect’s death.
