Get Notified When Victoria Posts New Art BiographySometimes it's the unusual and the quirky that sticks with me and finds its way into my work. Like when all the leaves have fallen in a forest and all the stems are pointing upwards and make little upward lines. Can't you just see how captivating that looks? Or sometimes I notice only where the light is falling on a leaf. When I catch a glimpse of these moments it's like they are stored in my subconscious and then resurface when I paint. Sometimes they are revealed as a new shape or combination of light and colour. I try to capture this fleeting memory in my work, either by conscious decision or by intuition, usually both at the same time. My work also explores the differences between the subtle bits alongside the bolder shapes found in the environment. By building up layers of colour, form and line, I recreate a reimagined landscape consisting of fragments of leaves, sticks and branches. The recurrent patterns that appear in my work allude to the beauty and simplicity of forms found in nature. For years I painted landscapes because I have always felt a deep connection with nature. Ever since I was a child I felt more comfortable outside in nature than inside. Over the years my work has become more and more abstract as I try to express my emotional connection to the natural world. Painting abstractly is a way to communicate what I feel as opposed to what I see. Contrary to what may seem logical, I paint abstractly so that I can express a more realistic portrayal of nature because it evokes that emotional response we feel when we are outside in nature. With colour, line work and composition, I try to convey what the landscape means to me. And hopefully you make your own connections with it. I live on the West Coast of Canada where I have loads of inspiration. It is here that I attended Emily Carr College of Art & Design, studied photography, and was introduced to the concept of experimental and process oriented exploration, sometimes with a camera but many times without one. Several years later, I attended Langara Fine Arts program and focused on painting and sculpture where I won the year end sculpture award. My exhibitions have included many local art events, shows and art crawls that have created interest in my work and recognition within the arts community.
