Things couldn’t have gone much better for Red Bull Racing on Sunday as Max Verstappen cruised to Monaco Grand Prix victory – to lead the World Drivers’ Championship for the first time in his career – and Sergio Perez vaulted from ninth to fourth to ensure it leads the constructors’ standings too.

Combined with Lewis Hamilton’s dismal weekend, rivals Mercedes’ woe was compounded by Valtteri Bottas being robbed of a certain runner-up spot due to a pitstop calamity. The way the wheelgun managed to strip the wheelnut seems a freak occurrence but it’s another devastating blow to Bottas, who just can’t seem to buy a break.

For Verstappen and Red Bull, this now appears to be the most serious threat to Merc’s unbroken dominance of the F1 turbo-hybrid engine era. Can they keep their challenge up?
