Sep 4th, 2018 This week's Hotline! includes the following articles: • Faculty, staff encouraged to attend ‘Back to the City Night’ Thursday • VCSU student Bennett receives recognition at Dakota Conference • Viking sports update • What’s happening at VCSU and around Valley City… The VCSU Hotline! online newsletter is published every Monday. Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. Faculty, staff encouraged to attend ‘Back to the City Night’ Thursday “Back to the City Night” will be held Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5:30–7:00 p.m. followed by “Meet in the Street” from 7–9 p.m. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this event, required for VCSU freshman. In an effort to “Welcome Home” new and returning students, “Back to the City Night” is an opportunity for downtown merchants to showcase their business offerings to VCSU students. This will include free samples, coupons, games, prizes and giveaways. The Valley City community and students can then gather and enjoy Open Mic night at Duttons, yard games, smores, street performers and more during “Meet in the Street.” If you would like to join the students as they walk downtown, meet at the south side of the walkbridge at 5:30 p.m. VCSU student Bennett receives recognition at Dakota Conference Madeline Bennett, a VCSU history student, received the Center for Western Studies Student Award at the 50th Annual Dakota Conference held April 20-21, 2018, at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D., for her research paper titled “North Dakota Agriculture During World War II: The Struggle to Feed an Army and a Nation.” Her paper focused on North Dakota’s struggle to obtain and maintain sufficient labor to provide the agricultural production needed during the war. The state fought hard to obtain the necessary agricultural draft deferments and recruited women to do what was traditionally men’s work. Agriculture was North Dakota’s greatest contribution to the nation’s war effort, and this success during the war proved long-lasting and turned into post-war prosperity for the state. This is the fourth consecutive year that a student from VCSU has received recognition for their research at the conference. Pictured (l to r) are VCSU’s Steven King, professor of social science, with students Autumn Johnson, Kylie Johnson and Bennett. Autumn and Kylie also presented papers at the conference.
