Alumnus Tharaldson ’67 to do book-signing at fieldhouse on May 8 Gary Tharaldson, entrepreneur, hotel magnate and a 1967 VCSU graduate, will sign copies of his biography, “Open Secrets of Success: The Gary Tharaldson Story,” in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 8. Tharaldson will sign and give away 100 books to the first arrivals at the signing; more books will be available for $12.99 after that. Described by Forbes magazine as North Dakota’s richest man, Tharaldson majored in business education at VCSU, did high school teaching and sold insurance before getting into the hotel and motel business. He purchased his first hotel, the Super 8 in Valley City, in 1982. By 2005 he had built and bought more than 400. In January 2018, he said he was still building 20 hotels every 15 months. An avid softball player and sponsor, Tharaldson is a member of the National Softball Hall of Fame. Kotta receives 'Difference Maker' award CJ Kotta, director for network services, recently received the "Difference Maker" award. He was nominated by his fellow colleagues in the Technology Services Department. His nomination read, “CJ Kotta is a leader for security at VCSU and within NDUS. During the month of April, VCSU became the first campus to fully implement DUO which is a big reason VCSU has so few compromised accounts. He is an expert for all things Cisco, including wireless, LAN, WAN and phone system. Up time for these systems is fantastic. He is also an active member of the Viking Booster Club.”
Gjovik named ACTE Region V Teacher Educator of the Year Peder Gjovik, associate professor and chair of the VCSU Department of Technology, was named ACTE Region V Teacher Educator of the Year at the Association for Career and Technical Education’s Region V Conference held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, April 11–14. The Teacher Educator of the Year award recognizes teacher educators who have demonstrated innovation in teacher education, leadership in improving Career and Technical Education (CTE) and commitment to preparing teachers to deliver high-quality CTE programs. As a regional Teacher Educator of the Year, Gjovik will participate in a competitive interview process for the national Teacher Educator of the Year award and attend the ACTE CareerTech VISION 2018 conference in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 28–Dec. 1, 2018. Athletic training faculty and students attend MAATA conference Rachelle Hunt, Sharon Bratrud, Angela Poole and and a group of athletic training students attended the 2018 Mid America Athletic Training Association (MAATA) District 5 conference and business meeting held March 15–17 in Omaha, Nebraska. A team of VCSU students—Austin Rinas, Anthony Whirlwind-Soldier, Brittany Nathan, and Emily Gadberry—competed against 13 teams from South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. The team had qualified for the district competition, a first for VCSU athletic training, after placing second of 10 teams in the North Dakota competition. Congratulations team VCSU! Significant topics explored at MAATA included concussion rehabilitation for return to activity and return to academics, legal and liability issues in health care, and psychosocial strategies during rehabilitation. Hunt attended an IV and Blood Draw Lab. IV administration, blood draws and testing are part of the new athletic training educational competencies and will be added to the athletic training curriculum at VCSU. Meyers published, new work commissioned Nicholaus Meyers, D.M.A., assistant professor of music and director of bands, will have three of his recent original compositions published by Per-Mus Publications. He also landed a commission for a new original composition. from a group which includes graduate students Ryan Loken and Matthew Winarski at the North Dakota State University School of Music, the North Dakota State University Percussion Studio, the North Dakota State University Horn Studio and the Horns of the North. Milner, students attend strength and conditioning clinic Sarah Milner, assistant professor in the Kinesiology and Human Performance Department, along with eight VCSU students from the department, attended the 2018 Sanford POWER Strength and Conditioning Clinic in Fargo April 13–14. Featured topics included “Critical Factors in Speed Training Design” and “Biomechanics & Teaching Schemes for Speed” by master coach Boo Schexnayder; an “Overview of Plyometrics” with Brett Bartholomew, strength and conditioning coach, author and consultant; and “The Starting Strength Method” and “Why Everyone Should Deadlift” by Matt Reynolds, elite powerlifter and strongman. The conference also included hands-on sessions at Sanford POWER. Athletic training faculty and students attend NDATA conference Rachelle Hunt, Sharon Bratrud, Angela Poole and 11 athletic training students attended the 2018 North Dakota Athletic Trainers’ Association (NDATA) conference and business meeting held April 13–14 in Grand Forks. Faculty and students engaged in evidence-based lectures and hands on experiences from expert health care providers from the area. Topics included concussion management, EKG readings and effective CPR, suture lab and gross anatomy (cadaver) lab. The material presented complies with the new CAATE standards, released in April 2018, and will be incorporated into current and future curriculum content. Viking sports update Softball Saturday: VCSU 5, Mayville State 4; VCSU 7, Mayville 2 Sunday: VCSU 8, Mayville 1; VCSU 9, Mayville 1 The Viking softball team closed the regular season with a four-game sweep of Mayville State this weekend. The Vikings have a 37-10 overall record entering the conference tournament. VCSU went 20-5 in NSAA play and is the No. 2 seed for the tournament starting Friday in Aberdeen, S.D. Baseball Friday: Mayville State 18, VCSU 0; Mayville 2, VCSU 0 Saturday: Mayville 10, VCSU 1; Mayville 7, VCSU 2 The Viking baseball team is now 14-27 overall and finishes 7-15 in conference play. VCSU hosts University of Mary on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season. The Vikings are the No. 7 seed for this weekend’s NSAA Tournament and will play Bellevue University on Friday in Jamestown. Track & Field VCSU freshman Kyle Odegard took first place in men's javelin, and the VCSU track and field teams placed fifth overall during the Ron Masanz Classic on Saturday in Moorhead. Odegard recorded a top toss of 59.47 meters (195-1) to win the men's javelin, giving him victories in all three meets he has competed at this spring. Golf The VCSU golf teams are competing Monday and Tuesday this week at the NSAA Spring Qualifier Golf Tournament. The 36-hole tournament will be played at Prairie Links Golf Course in Waverly, Iowa.
