Kuipers to speak at Barnes County Museum Nov. 16 Gilbert Kuipers, Ph.D., associate professor of science, will present “What is The Fundamental Purpose of Public Colleges?” at 7 p.m., Nov. 16., at the Barnes County Museum. Part of season 19 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series, the lecture is open to the public free of charge. For over a century, Americans have debated the nature of secondary and tertiary public education (e.g. Snedden vs. Dewey). Many trace this back to 1893, when about 100 scholars (10 committees of 10 persons each) proposed that all public high school students take a small core of strong liberal arts and science courses. On the other side were business and education leaders. According to Jeffrey Mirel, “As we know now, the Cardinal Principles team won. And they won because supporters of comprehensive high schools defined equal education as equal access to different and unequal programs.” Although the word “education” is not found in either the Declaration of Independence or the United States Constitution, there are clear references in many other documents of the time. A system of public education is implied in the Preamble of the Constitution and in Article IV Section 4. All states are required to have a system of public education divided into a lower level for all citizens and a higher level to prepare some citizens for positions of public trust. The Committee of Ten believed that those making decisions for the good of the public needed a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. Free planetarium show Nov. 18 A planetarium show will be presented Nov. 18 at 1 p.m., in the VCSU planetarium, Rhoades Science Center 309. The show is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. An elevator is available at the west entrance. The show, "The Zodiac," is a fun look at the stories surrounding the 12 zodiacal constellations that fall along the ecliptic plane over the course of the year. These ancient signs have been associated with astrology and are directly related to the early vestiges of astronomy. This 30-minute program, suitable for all ages, examines these constellations and the stories of ancient gods and heroes associated with them. Da Vinha discusses new book at Barnes County Museum Luis da Vinha, Ph.D., assistant professor of geography and political science, discussed his new book "Geographic Mental Maps and Foreign Policy Change: Re-Mapping the Carter Doctrine at the Barnes County Museum." Da Vinha discussed traditional explanations regarding the development of the Carter Doctrine which are based on punctuated equilibrium theory and argued in favor of employing alternative approaches such as emergent/continuous change theories to explain foreign policy change.
