Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. Senior art exhibit open The Valley City State University Art Department has announced the opening of Kaylee Johnson's Senior Exhibition "Prairie Roads." The exhibit will run through Sept. 15 in the VCSU Art Gallery on the third floor of McCarthy Hall. An artist talk and reception is scheduled for Sept. 8, from 4–6 p.m. in the McCarthy Gallery. All-Campus Convocation The All-Campus Convocation is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in Vangstad Auditorium. All employees are encouraged to attend. What in the World event set for Sept. 7 “Where Do You Come From? Stories of Immigration” will be held at the Barnes County Museum Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. Speakers include Muhend Abakar (Sudan), Esperance Mfurakazi (Congo), and Pal Garung (Nepal). These three students are featured in the book "Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from a Fargo High School." Emily Fenster, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Social Science Department at VCSU, will moderate the evening. We all have a story! Come just to listen or come and share! This event is being held in conjunction with a traveling exhibit sponsored by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church that will run at the Barnes County Museum through Sept. 12. The exhibit features panels with the pictures and stories of 15 students. Each panel also includes a QR code, which links to a short video about the students’ stories. The goal of these projects is to raise awareness about and understanding of the immigrant experience. Both the exhibit and the event are free and open to the public. The event is hosted by the campus-community organization “What in the World is Going On?” For more information, call 701-845-7321. Bluegrass jam at museum Saturday This month’s Valley City bluegrass jam session is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1–5 p.m. at the Barnes County Museum. The acoustic-only jam is free and open to the public; beginning bluegrass musicians are welcome. The jam is sponsored by the Bluegrass Association of North Dakota (B.A.N.D.) and the Barnes County Museum. For more information, call John Andrus at 701-762-4891. Scholarship drives underway Both the V-500 and Century Club scholarship drives are well underway. We want to thank the many members of the faculty and staff who have chosen to support these important drives. The dollars raised are a critical component of the strong scholarship program we have in place at VCSU. For the 2017-2018 academic year, the VCSU Foundation Office will award a total of $1.425 million in scholarship support to our students. Needless to say, this support has been an important factor in the record enrollment we have enjoyed at VCSU. If you are a member of either the Century Club or V-500, thank you for your support. If you are not, please consider joining our team. Stop by the VCSU Foundation Office and see how easy it is to become a member via payroll deduction. Remember, every gift helps, no matter how big or how small.
