You’re probably expecting me to talk about love, love, and more love today. But instead, I want to shine a light on something that also comes with a day like today: loneliness.
This Valentine’s Day, we’re swamped with posts, gifts, and trinkets about showing love, spreading love, and all that. Don’t get me wrong, you know me — I’m all about spreading love (without the fine print!). But I also can’t ignore the fact that the reason we need more love in the world is because we’re lacking so much of it.
For many of us, days like Valentine’s Day — when we’re supposed to feel the most loved — can actually be the days we feel our loneliness the most. Instead of highlighting love, it can end up highlighting what’s missing.
And that’s okay.
Many businesses ask us if we’d like to be exempt from Valentine’s Day promotions because many of us won’t celebrate it because… we’re lonely!
You’re not alone in feeling this way. This is a huge reason why I create art and do the work I do, but most importantly, it’s about the community that has been created.
When I left the church, I lost my whole community. Loneliness was so real for me. That’s why, 13 years ago, I created a private community called The Lasting Supper. It’s a safe space where people can belong, share their struggles, and find connections. I don’t promote it much because I struggle with how to communicate just how important this group is to me, and how much I think it helps those in it, without sounding “salesy.” But here’s my honest message: Finding a safe space where you belong, a community, is where you’ll ultimately find love.
