On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, the first of 360 Japanese warplanes appeared over the island of Oahu and began their attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor. They left much of the Pacific fleet useless - five of eight battleships, three destroyers plus seven other ships and more than 200 aircraft were destroyed. Additionally, 2400 Americans lost their lives and another 1200 were wounded. America was at war.

Governor-elect Spencer Cox and Lt. Governor-elect Deidre Henderson have announced their plans for their inauguration. Their inauguration will take place on January 4, 2021, the 125th anniversary of Utah statehood. They will be sworn in at the outdoor Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins, Utah. This will be the first inauguration ever held in rural Utah. Because of COVID-19, there will be a limited number of tickets available for socially distanced, masked-up guests ready to sit outside in January, rain, snow or shine.

On Friday evening, Allyson Gamble, the executive director of the Capitol Preservation Board, passed away after unexpectedly suffering a stroke on Wednesday evening. She was 52.Allyson served on the Capitol Preservation Board for 19 years, and as its director for the last 11 years, overseeing the day-to-day operations. She was instrumental in the 2004 remodeling and seismic retrofit of the Capitol and had a deep love for the people's house.

Romney: Final Defense Bill Limits Germany Troop Reductions
U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) released the following statement on Friday regarding the inclusion of a provision in the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aimed at preventing the withdrawal of thousands of U.S. troops from Germany. Romney previously fought to include such language during Senate consideration of the defense bill.

Momentum Slows in the Job Market
Zions Bank released the following information about a slowing job market recovery:For the fifth month in a row, the labor market recovery slowed. The U.S. added 245,000 jobs in November, an overall increase of jobs, but nearly 365,000 fewer jobs than were added in October. The labor market continues to struggle to recover from the COVID recession. While economic prospects look good several months in the future, the economy will continue to struggle in the short-term.
Report finds average Utah student loan debt is $30,900
A new report by Smartest Dollar looked at student loan debt in the United States. While forbearance programs keep the rate of student loan delinquencies and the burden of student loan debt suppressed for now, the longer term trend shows that student loan debt has been rising steadily for years. When forbearance programs end, Americans carrying high levels of student loan debt may struggle to pay.
Progress on emergency COVID-19 relief
Senator Mitt Romney sent the following information in his weekly newsletter:With a continued surge in COVID-19 cases, folks struggling to make ends meet, and small businesses on the brink of closure, Americans are in urgent need of additional relief. Congress must come together to get a deal done. This week, Senator Romney helped lead a large group of colleagues in introducing a bipartisan, bicameral COVID-19 emergency relief framework to help American students, families, businesses, workers, and health care providers.

1787 - Delaware becomes the first state to ratify the Constitution, with all 30 delegates voting unanimously.

1805 - Lewis and Clark temporarily settle in Fort Clatsop in what is now Oregon. While the three-month stay was peaceful, it was not altogether pleasant, with a scarcity of goods and a plenitude of rain which fell all but 12 days of their stay.

1941 - Pearl Harbor is attacked, killing more than 2400 naval and military personnel.

1988 - Two earthquakes hit Armenia, measuring 6.9 and 5.8 in magnitude. The quakes killed 60,000 people and destroyed nearly half a milion buildings. They were felt as far away as Turkey and Iran.
