Plus, how to address the parent-teacher divide on classroom involvement
Good morning! Here are today’s temperatures: ☀️ 50 – 85° in Logan ☀️ 60 – 90° in Salt Lake ☀️ 63 – 98° in St. George I personally don’t swear, as my mother promised to wash my mouth out with Tabasco sauce if I ever did. (She’s also a loyal subscriber of Utah Today — hi, Mom!) I guess the habit stuck, but today’s politicians don’t seem to have the same hesitancy. Jennifer Graham reports that Kamala Harris was recently called the “sweariest” politician, but she has stiff competition from plenty in the political sphere. Many of Donald Trump’s remarks have been censored, and Megyn Kelly frequently curses on her podcast. What do you think about swearing in politics? | | What do you think of when someone mentions Utah Lake? 🌊 Is it sweeping vistas and clean water? Or, more likely, is it algal blooms, invasive carp and even raw sewage? ☢️ Yes, as Amy Joi O’Donoghue reports, Utah Lake was once a repository for raw sewage. Non-native carp were introduced to the lake, pushing out the native fish and harming the water quality. Invasive plants have additionally harmed the local ecosystem. 🎉 However, this week is Climate Week and the Utah Lake Authority is celebrating the positive changes the lake has seen in recent years as a combination of agencies have tackled its problems. Here are some of their successes: The June sucker, the native fish of the lake, has seen its population grow from just 300 to 30,000. Invasive phragmites are down 70%. Algal bloom occurrences have decreased by 50%. Read more about Utah Lake’s recovery. The conservative think tank presented new polling data, as well as policy proposals to improve K-12 education by strengthening trust between parents and educators. The findings of the poll showed Utah parents and Utah teachers see each other very differently compared to the way they see themselves. The poll, conducted by Y2 Analytics among 560 likely Utah voters and 610 Utah teachers, found that 96% of parents believe they are very (58%) or somewhat (38%) involved in their children’s education. Only 4% felt they were not very involved. Teachers rated parent involvement differently. Less than two-thirds, 63%, of teachers believe parents are very (7%) or somewhat (56%) involved in their children’s education, according to the poll.
