| | While local and federal agencies have come under fire for their response to the deadly fires that tore through Hawaii, Joe Biden has been criticised by Republicans for going on holiday. Now, 13 days after a blaze destroyed the town of Lahaina, the US president and First Lady Jill Biden have been surveying the charred ruins. After taking an aerial tour, Mr Biden described the devastation as “overwhelming”. The president, who the White House said had delayed his trip to avoid distracting from recovery operations, promised support to rebuild communities, saying: “For as long as it takes, we’re going to be with you.” At least 114 people are confirmed to have died, with an estimated 850 more still missing. “The nation grieves with you,” Mr Biden told survivors. | | | | |

Many more are just exhausted, after 18 months fighting off Russia's full-scale invasion. But some men don't want to fight. Thousands have left the country, sometimes after bribing officials, and others are finding ways of dodging recruitment officers, who in turn have been accused of increasingly heavy-handed tactics.
