| US result on a knife-edge |

If you're hoping to find out the outcome of the US election, head straight to our live page for the latest. As News Daily goes to press the result is on a knife-edge. Donald Trump is so far doing much better than the pollsters predicted but, as expected, it's all going to come down to what happens in key battleground states. Those include Ohio, Texas and Florida - leaning Mr Trump's way - and Arizona - where challenger Joe Biden appears to have a lead in a once reliably conservative stronghold. Other so-called swing states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and North Carolina are too close to call. Turnout is likely to be the highest for a century.
Our correspondent Anthony Zurcher says the early and mail-in votes trended toward Mr Biden - as predicted - while the election-day results have favoured Mr Trump. The outcome in Arizona could be crucial, he adds - this is why. Addressing a socially distanced rally in Delaware, Mr Biden told supporters to "keep the faith", adding: "We feel good about where we are. We believe we are on track to win this election." As his rival spoke, Donald Trump tweeted: "We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the election." He has long been critical of the voting system - read more on that.
The race for the White House has been long and bitter - here are the highlights, if that's the right word. Control of Congress is also at stake - that's the part of the US government that writes and passes laws, and can make all the difference to what a president is and isn't able to do while in office.
We have charts showing all the latest data, and if the whole thing just feels overwhelming, read our very simple guide to the election.

| Three years after breaking away from Antarctica, the world's biggest iceberg is bearing down on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia, posing a threat to the rich wildlife of the area. Penguins and seals, in particular, could lose access to their normal foraging routes, preventing them from feeding their young properly. Read our story to find out more. | |

| | | | | The full count is never completed on election night - that is normal - but enough votes are usually in to confirm a winner. A state is "projected" by major US media outlets when they believe one candidate has an unbeatable lead. That's not the final result but it nearly always proves to be correct when all the votes are counted. Why is this year different? Well, the coronavirus pandemic means more people than ever voted early, either by post or in person. Postal votes typically take longer to count as they have to go through more steps to be verified, such as a signature and address check. | |

The tense wait for the outcome of the US election dominates many front pages. The Guardian calls it a "Battle for America's soul". On coronavirus, the Daily Mirror says England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, has "given Brits a boost" by suggesting the lockdown in England could be over before Christmas because a vaccine may be on the way. It says GPs are on stand-by to roll out a jab as soon as next month. The Daily Express, too, tells its readers Prof Whitty has "raised hopes of families being able to spend Christmas together". The i also reports the same developments, but sounds a note of caution. It says there's "no news yet on whether any trial vaccine will be effective, the timelines, or who could benefit", and the word from the Department of Health and Social Care at this stage is that there are "no certainties". Elsewhere, the Daily Telegraph reveals there's anger among Tory MPs that the new lockdown rules in England will force military veterans to stand outside in the cold on Remembrance Sunday. It says any veteran who attempts to go into church to attend a traditional service risks a £200 fine.
