A federal grand jury in the United States has issued a second indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, charging him with recruiting hackers to commit computer intrusions to benefit the whistle-blower website.

Content delivery network Akamai says it has mitigated the largest packet per second distributed denial of service attack recorded on its platform, with the attack generating 809 million packets per second and targeting a large European bank.

The US Government claims that a number of top Chinese companies, including telecommunications equipment maker Huawei and video surveillance firm Hikvision, are owned or controlled by the Chinese military, Reuters reports.

Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies has been given the green light to invest £1 billion (A$1.8 billion) in a research centre close to Cambridge in the UK that will focus on chip research and manufacturing.

Cyber criminals have used a little known ransomware, Sekhmet, to attack SilPac, a gas handling solutions company based in Santa Clara, California, with indications that the attackers retained their access to the company's systems after the initial encryption was completed.
