US-China trade war cools down, for now

The US and China have agreed a deal that will significantly cut the tariffs, or import taxes, both sides have imposed on one another for a 90-day period. Intensive talks in Switzerland this weekend marked the first meeting between the US and China since President Donald Trump began imposing new tariffs on Chinese goods in February. The pause will come into effect from Wednesday, with the US reducing tariffs on China to 30%, down from 145%. China will reduce duties on US goods to 10%, down from 125%. The cut was bigger than expected, writes international business correspondent Theo Leggett, and has been welcomed by analysts.

• Low-value packages: Shoppers were bracing for price hikes and shortages after Trump signed an order blocking packages from China worth less than $800 (£601) from freely entering the country.

• US-Canada trade tension: US towns bordering Canada are feeling the impact of the fraying relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

• Film tariffs: Trump's threat of a 100% levy against movies made in foreign countries was met with concern in the UK.
